How does the setting affect what is happening in this book?
In my book, The Lovely Bones, the setting affects what is happening in many ways. Susie, the main character is walking home from school alone and that is what makes all of this happen. Susie runs into Mr. Harvey, her neighbor, who wants to show her this secret hangout that he has created. Susie knows she should not go see it and she should go home but she knows that Mr. Harvey and her parents talk sometimes so it should be safe. She follows Mr. Harvey into a cornfield where he has a secret underground hangout. He asks her to come in and with some persuading she does. Susie gets herself into this situation because she feels awkward. She asks to leave but he wants her to stay and have a coke like a polite young lady. Soon he starts complimenting her and she knows she cannot get out of this situation. This is where the setting affects what is happening in this story. Susie is stuck in this hole and now he will not be able to get out. She may never be able to get out. Mr. Harvey starts complimenting her and Susie knows that she is set in this hole with him and she will never get out. Her parents will never see her again and neither will anyone else. This is the end for Susie because of the setting she was in at that exact time and place.
